Require that a hyphenated word remains on one line (Word 2000/2002/v. X/2003)
You may want to keep certain hyphenated terms from breaking at the end of a line. For example, if you’d prefer that the phone number 555-4312 not break to the next line between 5 and 4, you can insert a non-breaking hyphen. This way, if the phone number is too long to fit on one line, Word moves the entire phone number to the next line.
To insert a non-breaking hyphen:
1. Type the first three numbers (555).
2. In place of the regular hyphen, press [Ctrl][Shift][-] ([command][shift][-] in v. X).
3. Type the final four numbers (4312).
You’ll notice that although the non-breaking hyphen performs a slightly different function than the regular hyphen, the two marks look the same. If you show the formatting marks in your document, the non-breaking hyphen appears longer than the regular hyphen.
