There are few jobs as cool and as necessary as those within the cybersecurity realm. Professionals in this field are working on the cutting-edge of technology, using highly-refined computer based training to keep cybercriminals at bay. Working in cybersecurity is consistently challenging as hackers are constantly updating and changing their techniques in order to gain access to private data.
This is a double-edged sword, as it keeps the job interesting and new but also requires professionals to constantly be on their toes. That being said, tools to learn about the field are constantly growing, and it looks like 2016 is going to be a great year for those interested in cybersecurity.
“The 2015 cybersecurity market is worth $75 billion.”
The entire industry is set to explode.
With so many cybercriminals constantly working to steal private information, it’s no surprise that the cybersecurity market is set to boom over the next few years. Forbes reported that the global cybersecurity market is expected to hit $170 billion in 2020. With Gartner stating that the 2015 cybersecurity market is worth $75 billion, it’s clear that this sector is preparing itself for an explosion in the very near future.
This massive increase in cybersecurity spending indicates two things: First, it shows that executives are beginning to understand the threat a cyberattack poses to their company. While people have always known that cybercriminals can make off with data that could cost the company money, the real threat of reputational damage to your brand image is finally being recognized.
A study conducted by IBM and Forbes found that around 46 percent of organizations that experienced a cyberattack saw damage to their company’s image as a result. Although this may seem like victim blaming, it really makes sense from the point of view of the customer. No one wants to give their payment information to a business that has been successfully attacked. As such, people begin to associate the brand of that company with cybersecurity woes following an attack.
The second thing the market forecast indicates is that there is going to be a massive increase in cybersecurity jobs in the coming years. Much of the money spent on cybersecurity finds its way to the professionals working daily to keep companies safe, and as such, a lot of this increase in spending is going toward new jobs.
While this is great news for those in the field, the problem is cybersecurity already has a huge number of empty jobs. Currently, Cisco found that there are about 1 million cybersecurity positions worldwide that are unfilled. As the market grows, the number of new cybersecurity positions is also going to rise, demanding more people to move into the field.
Not just a global phenomenon
Although the numbers from Cisco have to do with the entire world, this gap in trained cybersecurity professionals is also a major problem for the U.S. specifically. An analysis from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics found that there are roughly 209,000 open cybersecurity positions in the U.S. right now.
This poses a major problem for modern organizations, as they scramble to find trained people to help keep hackers out of private data. While this is certainly a big issue for companies, it’s also a great opportunity for those willing to take the time to get computer based training in cybersecurity.
