The Transition From Military to Civilian – Overcoming the Challenge

military to civilianThere’s a critical connection to be made here.

According to recent estimates there are over a quarter million IT jobs going unfilled in the United States. At the same time, some of the most well-qualified candidates imaginable are returning from military service every day. These are serious, well-trained professional people who understand discipline, order, and chain of command. Reliable, field-proven.

Open jobs and ideal candidates. The only thing missing is specific training to qualify these candidates to actually perform the jobs that are waiting for them.

Seeking a New Horizon

This is the challenge facing many of those who have done their duty, served their country, and are returning home to build families and careers. They are highly competent, well-trained and conditioned individuals who have demonstrated their ability to obey orders and deliver extraordinary performance. They just don’t have the specific skills to let them apply to the business world what they’ve learned in the military.

Fortunately, there are several programs available to assist these fine people.

The United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) administers the GI Bill® for qualified veterans who may contact the VA by calling 1-888-GI-BILL-1 (1-888-442-4551) or visit U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs for more information. Alternately, they can contact New Horizons for more information.

Veterans with Vocational Rehabilitation benefits may be able to use those benefits for career development training. Authorized by Congress, the Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment (VR&E) Program aims to help veterans with service-connected disabilities prepare for, find, and keep suitable jobs.
To qualify for the VR&E program, an individual must undergo a comprehensive evaluation by a VA counselor, after which they will work together to develop a rehabilitation plan.

The Right Stuff

New Horizons Computer Learning Center’s government team assures that veterans will find the training they need to land civilian jobs in the military as well. As an example, the United States Department of Defense (DoD) 8140 model is based on the National Institute of Standard and Technology (NIST) National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education (NICE) standard. New Horizons Computer Learning has the training expertise and capability to thoroughly train Department of Defense (DoD) personnel and contractors to comply with the very specific certification requirements of Directive 8140. The new framework allows for many different classes, certifications and formalized training to now qualify an individual as “certified” in that task.

Similarly, in August of 2004 the DoD signed Directive 8570, which requires every part-time or full-time military member or defense contractor with privileged access to a DoD information system to carry an approved certification for their particular job classification. This measure ensures that those performing information assurance (security) measures have the necessary skills and knowledge to protect important information.

New hires must obtain appropriate baseline certifications within six months of being assigned to information assurance functions. NH Computer Learning can help veterans achieve Directive 8570 certification requirements, providing a complete and thorough training solution to help prepare them to pass Directive 8570 certification exams.

Our Directive 8570 solutions include:

  • Baseline certification training for those who perform Information Assurance functions
  • Continuous education to maintain certifications and further develop skills
  • Certification training for specific operating systems
