IPv6 is designed to eventually replace the current protocol, IPv4, altogether. Its much larger address space and security requirements (such as the requirement that all IPv6 implementations support IPsec) give it big advantages over IPv4. Windows 2000/XP/2003 already support IPv6, but the following are some of the new or improved IPv6 features in Vista:

•	There’s a single integrated TCP/IP stack in which IPv4 and IPv6 share the Transport and Framing layers, instead of two separate protocol components, as in Windows XP/2003. This means you don’t have to install IPv6 as a separate component. IPv6 is installed and enabled by default.

•	IPv6 applications will have better connectivity and performance because Vista prefers IPv6 over IPv4 (this does not negatively affect IPv4 operation).

•	You’ll be able to configure the IPv6 settings through the graphical interface, instead of having to use the command line tool netsh to make changes to IPv6 settings. This is done through the Connections and Adapters folder.

•	IPv6 in Vista will have full support for IPsec. The IPv6 version in XP/2003 doesn’t support the data encryption functionality of IPsec, nor does it support Internet Key Exchange (IKE). In Vista, you can encrypt IPv6 data with IPsec using AES 128, 192, or 256.

•	In Vista, you’ll be able to connect to a web server on an IPv6 network by entering the literal IPv6 IP address (the 128-bit, eight-part hexadecimal address, with the parts separated by colons) as the URL, which can be useful when troubleshooting web-connectivity problems.

•	Vista allows you to use IPv6 over the Point to Point Protocol (PPP) with the built-in remote access client software. You can connect to a remote access server on an IPv6 network via a dial-up or PPPoE connection using PPPv6.

Recovering from a failed boot or needing to perform other system maintenance functions prior to loading Windows has always been a challenge. But there is good news. With the release of Windows Vista, Microsoft now provides its Pre-installation Environment (PE) to all licensed users. Once available only to volume licensing customers, PE provides easy access to several critical tools. For example, you can repair the master boot record, restore Vista to a previous working state, restore the entire PC from a backup image, test memory, and gain access to the command line tools. To access system recovery option, follow these steps:

Boot your system from the Vista installation disc.

Select your language, time and currency format, and keyboard type.

Click Next, and then click on the Repair Your Computer link to display the System Recovery Options dialog box.

Select the operating system you want to repair, and then click Next.

On the Choose A Recovery Tool page, click on the link corresponding to the task you want to complete.

As funny as “You’re coming to a sad realization: Cancel or Allow” is, working around Vista’s User Account Control (UAC) to perform many daily functions is no laughing matter.

What is UAC and why is it good for you?
Vista’s User Account Control allows both administrator accounts and standard user accounts, but is more secure than XP accounts because it limits the general access that even an administrator has. Both account types run applications as standard users because without administrator access to applications, viruses can’t propagate.

Will you love UAC or hate it?
Whether you love or hate UAC will depend on how much you take advantage of administrative rights in Windows XP.

Thus, a lesson on implementing parental controls with Vista is below.

Parental Controls on a Domain
If you want to use Parental Controls on a domain member Vista Ultimate computer, you need to enable the option with Group Policy. This might come in handy if you use a laptop for work at home and in the office — but allow your kids to use it. To enable Parental Controls for the domain machine, use the Make Parental Controls Control Panel Visible On A Domain policy in the Local Computer Policy\Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Parental Controls node.
